Opepens begun as a generative Non-Fungible Token (NFT) art collection created by Jack Butcher, built around a shared visual framework that invited different interpretations. The project eventually expanded into a more community-driven format, inviting artists and designers to share their intepretation of an Opepen.
What drew me to it was how a single underlying structure could produce so many distinct outcomes depending on the designer’s style and approach. To me, it was a great opportunity to explore graphic design trends.

Research
Initially, I was unsure of which direction I should take, especially since the Opepen community had already created many distinctive interpretations across different styles. To better understand the different ways a Opepen could be designed and reintepreted beyond its basic schematics (shown on the left), I began by exploring the community's work and drawing inspiration from there.

DESIGN
Using Adobe Illustrator, I explored how different textures and treatments could reshape Opepen’s basic form into distinct visual outcomes. My goal was to push beyond the base framework and create something recognizably Opepen, yet visually unique. What made this especially interesting was the challenge of working within a fixed set of constraints while still finding room for creativity, much like the many artists who have reinterpreted the form in their own distinctive ways.
